“Day 1 CPT” is an informal term commonly used for graduate programs where eligible F-1 students may receive Curricular Practical Training authorization beginning in their first academic term. Federal regulations require CPT to be an integral part of an established curriculum and directly related to the student’s major. Graduate students may qualify for an exception to the normal one-academic-year requirement when their program requires immediate participation in CPT.

How to Choose a Day 1 CPT Program

1. Choose a program that serves a genuine academic and career purpose

Students pursuing an additional degree should be able to explain the academic purpose of the new program and how it supports their educational or professional development. Having a previous degree in a similar field does not, by itself, determine CPT eligibility. CPT eligibility instead depends on whether the practical training meets federal requirements and the school's curriculum and authorization requirements.

2. Choose a major that closely relates to your CPT employment

Federal CPT rules require practical training to relate directly to the student's major area of study. In addition, current SEVP guidance requires the training to be an integral and required part of the applicable established curriculum. The school's DSO ultimately determines whether a proposed CPT placement meets those requirements.

3. Consider whether the degree represents logical academic progression

Some students choose a higher degree level, such as moving from a master's degree to a doctoral program, while others pursue an additional master's degree in a different or more specialized field. Degree level itself does not establish CPT eligibility. Students should evaluate whether the program makes academic sense for their background and goals.
