CPT Activation and Application Guidelines at Goldey-Beacom College
Graduate students at GBC may be eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) employment at different points in their academic journey. Some can start CPT as early as the beginning of their program, while others must first complete a full academic year (three consecutive semesters). CPT authorization lasts up to one year and can be renewed annually, subject to eligibility.
Eligibility Criteria for Immediate CPT Approval:
Students must meet both of the following:
- Completed at least one full academic year at a regionally accredited, not-for-profit U.S. college or university.
- Be in active F1 status.
Students transitioning from working visas (e.g., H1B, L1, L2, J1, J2) to F1 status may work immediately after enrollment and change-of-status approval, with Designated School Official (DSO) authorization.
Eligibility After One Academic Year:
Students must complete one full academic year (three consecutive semesters) before CPT eligibility if they:
- Are transitioning from H4, F2, or B1/B2 visas to F1 status.
- Have not completed one academic year at a regionally accredited, not-for-profit U.S. institution (note: ESL programs do not count as academic study).
- Arrive from overseas on a new I-20 and SEVIS ID (CPT eligibility under a previous SEVIS ID is not transferable).
CPT Application Process:
New students must submit their application to International Student Services, while returning students should submit materials to Career Services at careers@gbc.edu. Required documents include:
- The CPT Application Form.
- The CPT Employer and Student Agreement Form.
- An offer or hire letter from the employer.
- The student’s most recent resume.
Application Timeline:
There is no strict deadline for CPT applications. However, students planning to begin CPT with their coursework should apply at least two weeks before the session start. Processing typically takes up to 10 business days but may be quicker depending on volume.
CPT and Internship Credit Requirements:
Once CPT is approved, a one-credit internship course will be added to the student’s schedule for that semester. To earn a grade for this course, students must submit a term paper and ensure their employer completes an evaluation form as the CPT term concludes. Details and submission links can be found on the CPT page under the “Career Services” tab on Campus Web. The employer evaluation link should be forwarded to the student’s supervisor for direct submission to Academic Affairs.
By following these guidelines, students can successfully navigate the CPT process and integrate valuable work experience with their academic goals.
- Attendance is mandatory for students; failure to attend onsite courses will result in the loss of F1 status.
- Onsite Requirement: 2 days per semester
- On-site Date: On-site sessions occur, essentially, once a month. However, students are not required to enroll in a hybrid course for both sessions in a semester. Most students will come to campus two times in an 8-week session while enrolling entirely online in the other session for the semester.
NOTE: Goldey-Beason College (GBC) has one of the lowest RFE rates among all Day 1 CPT universities. It is highly recommended for international students who plan to stay in the U.S. for the long run.
