Day 1 CPT is attractive because you can start working immediately while staying in F-1 status. But you’re still a student on paper: you have to stay full-time, show up for required in-person classes, keep up with coursework, and maintain academic progress.
That’s manageable when work is calm. It’s a different story when you hit product launches, performance review season, layoffs, team changes, or a job search. Without a way to legally slow down school, you’re forced to choose between burning out, falling behind, or risking status.
A clear vacation policy gives you a legal buffer: you can step back from courses for a term, focus on work or a transition, and then come back. At some schools, you can even keep CPT during that break, which means you don’t have to sacrifice income or experience just to stay sane.

Among Day 1 CPT schools, Salem University is known for a particularly flexible structure for working professionals.
Instead of forcing you to complete two or three semesters before you’re allowed to rest, Salem builds in a simple summer option: between May and September, students can take a full vacation term. You don’t need a long history in the program first.
During this summer break:
- You don’t take classes.

- You can usually continue using CPT and work full-time during the summer vacation.
