Day 1 CPT Application Timeline: How to Enroll Before Your OPT Ends

Start with three dates: your current employment-authorization end date, the target university’s next program start date, and the date your current school can release your SEVIS record.

From there, compare Day 1 CPT universities using the factors that can materially affect your timeline: program relevance to your employment, tuition, location, required on-site attendance, admissions requirements, and upcoming enrollment windows.

Do not choose a university only because it appears to offer faster CPT processing. CPT must be connected to the academic curriculum and authorized by the DSO for the specific practical-training opportunity.

Apply to Day 1 CPT universities are fairly straightforward and simple. For the most part, you only need to go on to the application portal of your chosen school and upload all required materials. If you’ve already had a degree in the U.S., you do not need English test results. Your English test will be waived automatically.

Admission processing time varies by university, program, intake, and whether the application is complete. If your OPT is approaching its end date, compare the schools’ current admissions timelines before choosing an intake rather than relying on a single 1–4 week estimate.

1. The overall GPA of your previous program is too low, i.e., lower than 3.0.

3. Plan Your SEVIS Transfer Carefully

After admission, ask your current school about its SEVIS-transfer procedure and processing time. Your current DSO will normally need proof that you have been admitted to the new SEVP-certified school and will establish a transfer-release date.

 The release date matters because your existing OPT employment authorization does not simply carry over to the new school. ICE guidance states that an F-1 student with an unexpired EAD may continue authorized employment only through the transfer-release date; employment based on the old school’s authorization cannot continue afterward. 

Coordinate the transfer-release date with the new program’s start date and CPT-processing requirements. Do not select an early release date merely to speed up enrollment without understanding how it affects your existing employment authorization.

Your new program must also comply with the applicable transfer timing rules. Confirm your individual timeline with both schools’ DSOs before the transfer occurs.

Once your SEVIS is transferred to your Day 1 CPT universities, you are officially a member of the Day 1 CPT squad!

4. Get CPT Authorization Before You Work

The goal of this step is to obtain your CPT I-20.

To secure a CPT I-20, you'll need an offer letter from your employer or have them sign a CPT agreement. Depending on your company's policies, some may be more CPT-friendly than others. If you're having difficulty obtaining a signature from your manager for your CPT agreement, consult with an advisor at your Day 1 CPT university to see if there's a workaround.

When Can I Legally Start Working on CPT?

Once you receive your CPT I-20! This usually occurs on or after the semester's starting date.

Tips: Although for most Day 1 CPT universities, the earliest date you can start using your CPT is the first day of the semester, some universities actually allow students to begin the CPT application process early. As a result, students at these universities can start using their CPT even before the actual semester begins. This provides a significant advantage to those who have little time to wait and are facing OPT expiration soon.

You can use CPT 30 days before school starts at the following Day 1 CPT universities:

• Ottawa University

• National Louis University

• Humphreys University

• Trine University (not exactly 30 days; the start date depends on when their "orientation" begins, which may vary from semester to semester)

Build the Timeline Before Your OPT Ends

If your OPT or STEM OPT is approaching its end date, the most important step is to work backward from that date. Compare current Day 1 CPT enrollment windows, choose a program that fits your academic and employment background, submit your application early, and coordinate the SEVIS transfer with both schools before your existing employment authorization ends.

 Remember that admission and SEVIS transfer are not the same as CPT authorization. You should begin CPT employment only after your DSO has authorized it and your Form I-20 shows the applicable CPT start date.
